I'll trade ya

As we age, waking up in the morning is always an adventure in to "what hurts today". Prior to workouts, it was the stiff joints and the hurt all over after a day of physical activities. Seems like now that some group of muscles are sore every day, particularly after a good workout. Guess I will take the sore from exercise over the stiff joints. At least I now know that there is a reason for it. Wednesday's class really worked a group of new muscles and I am very sore mainly in the legs. Several of the group missed class including Frank. I forgot that he was going to visit over in Louisiana. He told me that he is always sore somewhere and always has been.
Temps remain cool, low 40's, and we got only a trace of rain. This may slow some of the few plants I have potted up for the sale coming up in about 10 days.

I am really wanting to try the Body Pump class just to see if I am ready for it. It is an hour long and several of the Express members do it. It is right after class so this makes for an hour and a half workout. Kolby told me not to do it and I will follow his advise. So I am thinking of subbing it for Express one day, seeing if it is what I want or not. I know that I can now hang with most class members other than Frank. Lots of options and since some of the Buddies do it I will still get the enjoyable chat time.
Friday morning I will see Kolby and have the last Smoking class. I saw Zerk and he is doing well with the surgery recovery. He will need to start the next class starting at the end of April. I am not sure but think he may have slipped up and smoked. I am glad I am a Non-Smoker.

Back in the swing of things

The injury of Wednesday then pampering on Friday made the workout of Monday tough. I did go early and do most of my treadmill time prior to the class. I knew that this would be hard with the slack time of several days and I was not wrong.
Today I am very sore in many areas of the body. Nothing wrong with the leg area that I hurt last week, just muscles that had not been used in a while. Kris was the coach for the class and will continue in this role. He is very focused on the legs and most workout stations were designed to work this area of the body. He likes to have more stations with just two rotations. I am not sure of why he prefers this set up but it seems to work you in more areas. He is also more focused on us doing each activity correctly, making minor adjustments to target specific areas. Either way, I was tired out after the workout. I did do my strength training after class. I was not able to add reps or weight to my plan, maybe next time.
Temps dropped and it is a bit chilly again. Rain in the forecast but none yet. We are dangerously dry and springs are usually the catch up rainfall time for us. Grass fires and burn bans are scattered across our area. Most of the grass in the back yard is dead from either the drought of last summer or the hard winter temps. Not sure of how I will address this problem but with so little rain, I will put it on hold for a while.
Being a Non-Smoker does not keep the urges or triggers from coming around. They are still there but only for a short moment or so. I still am chewing gum often. May not be great but better than smoking. I am still eating more and sticking with mostly fruit and trail mix as the snacks.
A little late start today but with only cardio scheduled, not a problem.

Some things I needed to do

On January 19 of this year, I bought my last pack of cigarettes and began my patch days and going smokeless. The Pack, still half full with lighter, has been in plane view on the down stairs desk right next to the week of charting my smoking patterns sheets. I could easily see them and guess in the back of my mind knew if worse came to worse, I could get one and smoke it. Not sure why but this knowing was a bit comforting to me but never did I even consider smoking one. Funny but maybe my security blanket. So yesterday, I angrily ripped the pack into pieces being sure I destroyed each and ever smoke. The Marlboro Man was dead !
I also needed to go ahead and face the Greenhouse and the smelly, mush of what was left of my collection of Elephant Ears and Cajun Hibiscus. These were my favorite plants for the last few years. As I moved each one outside and trimmed back the obvious dead, there was still a tiny bit of hope. At the base of many was a little bit of green. Maybe a few survived after all. The Greenhouse smells much better now but still a bit to go. Guess my new improved sense of smell was not a positive this time.
The ballgames are getting close to championship time. Still happy that there are still 2 "little guys" alive. Will watch these today and hope my picks will live to play another day. Even did a few "home exercises" as I watched.
A few chores down and a few still to go.

Modified class

Lots of activities going this morning. Met Kolby at 8:00, who came in early to the fitness center for my smoking class. Only one more class to go. It did make me remember and plan on not relapsing, still 40% chance. I feel good about my being a Non Smoker and do not see me ever smoking again.
Talked to Kobly on the workout and leg injury. He looked and poked around and said to take it easy until next week. Do the class but skip any activity that may use that muscle much at all. So I did make the class and only missed one or two exercises. Leg seemed fine.
Headed off to the Demo Garden and the work day. We got a new compost bin constructed and it will demonstrate things much better. Looks good too.
Enjoyed seeing the MG gang, workouts and hearing from Kolby. He said only one of the classes, Express or Body Pump. May need to do the pump instead of the Express one day a week.
I think the leg will be fine by Monday but realize that things heal a bit slower when we age.
Good ball games this weekend.

Raise the Bar

Decked out in my new workout shirt (Thanks James) I was headed to the fitness center with the mindset of doing the Body Pump workout. Of course I arrived early and did a good warm up on the treadmill, then Frank walks in the door. Frank has 10 years on me but has been working out forever. He motivates me and is very inspirational. I told him about my ideas on the Body Pump class, so he was eager to show me around and help me set the weights up and select the correct amount for me to start with. He encouraged me to start low and only work slow at first. This is an hour class that follows the Express class. This would make for and hour and a half total of fairly hard exercise. I am ready and pumped and wanting to "raise the bar". First we headed for the Express class. The 2nd rotation of the Express exercises, doing the mountain climber, I felt the strain or pop in my upper leg. I stopped immediately and Chris got the ice bag. Shortly the pain was mostly gone and I was able to walk around better and even stretch the area a bit. I could do some of the remaining class exercises as long as the upper leg muscles were not used. Chris, the new trainer, suggested I continue to ice it and stretch several times for the next few days. So I sit here with a bag of ice in my pants pocket, which places the ice exactly on the painful spot. Hope it is not that bad and I can reach my goal of the added class soon. Guess the bar will stay in place for a while.
Funny, the drive home had me thinking about a smoke. I did not smoke but the thought came to me. I still have a few more of the smoking classes. Guess I better make them all. Yesterday I also went to do my cardio around lunch time. A program at the fitness center on Functional Training sounded interesting so I went. Not that great and the presenter did not seem that prepared of sold on the ideas. Should have just done the treadmill. Oh well, they did give out smoothies, which were good.
Tomorrow the Master Gardeners will judge the horticulture entries at the show barn. This is the county stock show but most years brings more animals than plants. Last year the plants were not very good specimens so hopefully better this year. We also have another Workday at the Demo Gardens.
I realize that in each of these areas, gardening, workouts and not smoking, it is a continued work in progress. You never finish and can only get better, stay the same or regress.
Maybe I can raise the bar next time.

Hoops, loving it !

The first week of games are always the best. Love it when the little guys beat the big boys and I got plenty of that this year. Lots of buzzer beaters and heart breakers in the 52 games. I did not watch all of them but the ones I did are great. Somehow I did not need smokes to get me through the exciting times. Even did a few exercises while watching, hoping that Monday workouts will go a bit easier.
I do look forward to going to the fitness center this morning. The "Morning Crew" is becoming a group to hang with and motivate each other. I do hope that the Express class is better organized today. We have a few rather outspoken folks that have been members for years that will speak their mind to the higher-ups. Hope that is not needed. I am getting stronger and Monday's are when I add a little weight to my strength machines.
Hope to get a few things done in the yard. I am about ready to get some "day workers" to come do the hard parts. Maybe I can pot up a few more flats of Sale plants today.
Looking for the start of another good week. Bet the "blue hairs " will checking me out in my new workout shirt.

Plant man is back

It felt good to get back to gardening this morning. Not sure why but the bug bit me and I started the process. Had to come inside to get a lighter to start the burn pile that was way over due for burning. Now that was a real Marlboro time of the past. Anyway got that done and started to find things to pot up for the sale. About 5 flats of plants ready now and more spotted.
Friday's workout was a good one which included the Express class with new teacher. O K but they will need to get things together as our group was there and waiting for the coach. I bet that is fixed by Monday.
After workout, the MGers had a work day at the Demo. Things are really popping but the temps are unusually high for now, near 80 in the afternoon. I still think that we will get another cold spell but for all is said and done.
Feels good to get back out side gardening, workout really have made many chores seem easy. Of course, not smoking is also great. So glad these changes are being made. The games are getting good and so I will again watch a "few". No workout may get me to doing the home-gym ones.
I think I will give the Top Dog Sales up to Dave. He and his children must have tons going and it is hard to out sell a cute little kids talking plants. They are cute with their own plant booth. Oh well, I will not be last.

As sure as death, taxes and .......

weeds...
Spring does have it's predictable chores. I did get the tax information completed and turned into the tax man. Really did very little consulting last year.
The weeds are popping up every where. I have not been motivated to do any or very little gardening this year. Not sure if the death of most in the greenhouse or what has me in this place. Usually I am waiting by the door for day light so that I can get out there and get going. List upon list of new areas to plant with new plants to try. I still have little to sell at the plant sale coming up too soon- April 9. Not sure why I am not in the gardening mood yet. Maybe because there is so much to be done. Neglected my place last year for the Demo Garden. Maybe it is the 2 years behind situation.
I did make the workout session yesterday. Did my routine and the class. Kolby has moved on to his new position so we had another trainer. Very good but not Kolby. Several of the exercises were hard for me. Push ups and planks were not the problem but the crunches and ab work is the killer. I will work on this area and get better soon. I just did not feel great but tired and tummy not so good. Rested most of the afternoon.
Yesterday after the workout I was beat. I really wanted to do some gardening shores but could not get going. Today I may do the gardening first then go do the cardio. I am sure the garden chores will provide some good exercise but I do not want to make a habit of skipping workouts and rationalizing.
Happy St. Patty's Day.

Let the games begin...

The Tourney Brackets are set with the usual East Coast bias. It is all about the TV ratings as to the seeding of the schools, oh well, just enjoy the games and maybe a little guy will knock off one of those " favorites."
Monday's workout was the usual hard routine and class. Struggled a bit but worked hard and was pleased. I need to work the core much more to make these better. I was able to add a tiny bit to the elliptical, but still far from good on this.
Master Gardener's meeting at 10:00 so had to hurry to make it on time. Enjoyed the meeting and program on "wild hogs". Lunch with a few members was also nice. Plant sale will be very early this year as we need to work around SFA sale, Easter and other activities. This just means that I will not have nearly the amount to sale as usual
As a Non-Smoker for several days now, I have not seen much change. Still the occasional craving that goes away as fast as it appears. My biggest trigger is the break after doing some garden chores.
Today I will go to the dentist and have my teeth cleaned. I think this may be similar to cleaning out my truck.
Better get my Cheerios and blueberries and get out the door. I want to get a good workout today because the games may cause me to cut some of them a little short. Of course, I could watch games while on the treadmill or even do my home remedies . Easy to work the stomach at home if I will just do it.
The Spring forward time change has me a bit confused. Outta here....

NON- SMOKER

No patch, no nicotine, smoke free, ex-smoker finally Non-Smoker.
No patch was no problem as I did not even notice any difference at all. May have slept a little better and there was not the bother of putting on the patch or the rash from past patches. To celebrate, Fran and I will head to Tyler this morning. Brookshire Fresh, a new grocery store has opened. It should be like the ones in Austin we like to shop. I am almost out of fruit, so I know that will be my first stop.
I eat a lot of fruit now. Every day I eat an apple, orange, banana, strawberries, blueberries and/or blackberries. Usually it is a combination of several of these. One of these with my Trail Mix makes a good mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack. Berries on the frozen Yogurt continues to be my night time favorite.

Friday at the fitness center calls for my cardio, strength and Express class. Arrived early so most of my workout part was finished prior to class. Class worked on Abs almost the entire time. This is a weakness for me and made class hard. I was not able to complete several of the stations. I know where I need the most work and will focus in this area for a while. I do not like being unable to do the Express exercises.

Several gardening chores were on my "to do" list but did not get done. I was really tired out after the workout. I piddled around a bit but did not get any job scratched off the list. Lunch, ball games and then nap won the battle.
I did get by my friends greenhouse. Travis is going to drop by and needed a few hanging baskets for a project. Got those and enjoyed seeing the flowers. Maybe this will get me going with the gardening.
We will see. Did I tell you, I am a Non-Smoker !

Home remedies..

A meeting that I felt obligated to attend caused me to miss the class portion of my workout session. I really did miss the class and challenges that it creates for me. I did get to the center later and did my usual routine and did it well. It just did not seem the same even with me adding some of the stations that the class usually provides. Some ball games have begun so I knew I would watch them. I set up my home made training stations and tried them out. This can become a good substitute for the real thing. By the way the meeting was a bust as far as I am concerned.
Today is the last day for patches and also the Cessation class. Not sure on the number of classes remaining but I will follow through and complete the course. I know I need all of the support I can get to prevent a relapse. Glad the patch days will be over and I can see how things go nicotine free. The patches are starting to cause a little rash and itchiness for me.
Beautiful days lately but cooler this weekend. Really want to get out and get a few things accomplished in the gardening area.

Tomorrow I can say Non-Smoker using my definition. Finally. Proud of this more than anything.
Thinking about long term goals.....wonder if I could.....

But who's counting...

Looking over my Farmer's Almanac calendar, there are lots of things slipping up on me.
0 days until I must get a haircut.
2 days until I am finished with the Patches
6 days until the Madness begins
7 days until the last average frost day and I do not have my tomatoes beds worked
1 month until our Plant Sale and I have zero plants potted up. Yikes !!

Counting in the other direction -
48 days being smoke free
12 weeks or 60 sessions of workouts

Yesterday's workout was good but hard like Mondays always go. I still enjoy the Express class and push hard in each station. I continue to get better and stronger each week. It is really amazing to think back on days prior to beginning workouts.
I will have my annual doctors checkup soon and will see how the changes have improved my health.
After workouts yesterday I needed a test on my smoking resistance. I dropped by friends that are heavy smokers. This always means coffee and chat, both triggers for smoking for me. I did have coffee and we did chat but surprised that there were not any real pulls on me for a smoke. Actually, the smell was not an attraction at all but more of a negative. I am not there yet but this was a very good sign for me. Ready to ditch the patches in a few days and pass another test. Mentally I think I am there, anxious to see if there will be any withdrawals to deal with.
A nice rain this morning and a bit cool to me. Hope to schedule a hair cut around my cardio workout. Also ready to see if I can/will do any exercise at home. I know lots of TV time coming with the games about to begin. Also must get some of the gardening chores started.
Also notice that I am eating a good bit more. Still sticking with mostly fruits and nut type between meal snacks. Hope to gain a little weight but not a belly.

March Madness coming soon

These games may be my favorite time of the year for watching sports.
Multiple games on many of these days and nights. I love it when a
small unknown school beats one of the big boys. I can and will watch
way to many games. So this year I am planning to get a little exercise
while watching. I want to set up my own little Express area in the living
room. Will get a yoga mat and stop watch today. I think I have most of
the other things to create the needed home gym area. Fran has a ball,
light weights, a step and a few more items. Planks, push ups, and other
exercises require nothing. At least I will get some activity while
watching the games. This will not substitute for my regular gym time,
but only a bonus.
Smoking went much better yesterday. Only a few more patches and I
will be glad when they are gone and I am nicotine free. I know that I
need to plan for this and that a few tough times are ahead but I have
come too far to fail now. The determined Anything will see me through
the hard times.
Rainy morning today but much needed as we are so low on rain fall for the year. Fire dangers and no burn postings are still in many areas of Texas.
Yesterdays Master Gardener's work day was fun. Good turnout and a good bit of work completed. With warm weather the past few weeks, things are busting out. But don't be fooled another freeze will come. ( I did my 9:00 class so was a little late. )
Since I am going out to shop for a few things I might as well drop by the gym and get in a little cardio. I think this exercise thing is habit forming.

Don't get fooled

The last couple of weeks have been much warmer than average in my area. This has many of the spring flowering trees and shrubs showing their colors early. This warm trend also signals the spring fever in us. WHOA ! Easter comes late this year ( April 24 ) and we always have a cold snap around this time. Yesterday I did get out and do some much needed pruning of plants. It only made a small dent in things that I need to get done. I do not need to jump the gun with some things.
Yesterday I just went in early to get my cardio training in prior to the smoking class. It was only Kolby and I in class so we viewed the video and discussed things. I liked this as it was a one on one for the whole time. Interesting that the subject of the video was " Preventing Relapse". Very timely for me as I could see myself getting fooled in my process of not smoking. Also discussed my progress in the workouts, again an area that I need to be reminded that I am really only a beginner in the area. Good class with subjects that helped me remember things.
Today the Master Gardener's have another workday. I will workout, do my class and arrive at the Garden late. Priorities :)
Fran has isolated only one area of the house as her smoking area. This has made things better for me. I think this also has her thinking. She told me that she has begun to count and chart her smoking habit, ask about the patch. Not sure what this means but maybe she will join me. I know she will join me at the fitness center after retirement. Maybe this stuff is catching. Becoming a Non-Smoker is a big decision, you can not do it for someone else.

Git R Done..

Today is Texas Independence Day so Happy Birthday Texas.
It is also Wednesday and my cardio, strength and Express class day. Look forward to these days because the class really pushes me.
Yesterday was really "Git R Done" day for me. After the cardio workout, I went to hardware store and picked up supplies for my needed list of chores. I had called my handy man friend and was in luck as he was at the store. Got the needs and had punched my list of thing to do by lunch time.
My biggest need was to get the water line repaired that goes to the Greenhouse.
Worked in the greenhouse and did the dreaded survey of dead or alive plants. Maybe 25% of things will make it in an overfilled building. Started whacking back mainly hibiscus to see if there was any green wood to indicate life. Several large garbage cans later, there is a little hope. Interesting that after completing this chore the urge for a smoke was stronger than I had experienced in all of the smoke free days to date. Wow, I had to just go inside and eat a bite to get over this craving. Made it but again Wow, this was a wake up call that will be a battle forever.
I still will and am doing anything to quit.
Gotta go get ready for the workout. Get R Done.

The Ides of March are coming...

...and am I so ready for it.
March 15 is the last average frost date for my growing zone. I will also be nicotine free, smoke free and should claim the title of Non-Smoker. This will also mark 3 months of workouts. I am quite proud of the decisions that have resulted in major changes in my life.
This is also March Madness, with the start of the NCAA basketball tourney. This may be my favorite sporting event of the year. So many games on TV that even I can get crazy watching them.
The only issue I see is the conflict of workouts and gardening projects. Master Gardener work days are usually on Fridays and I really enjoy these and want to continue my involvement with them. We have one coming up this Friday. The Express workout classes are Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, which I also enjoy. Since both are scheduled for 9:00 a.m., I must choose one or be late for the work day if I try to make both. We will see which activity wins out or the compromise that I can come up with to solve the issue.
I can also see the 5 days a week workout schedule get tested. With more activities in the spring, my ambitious plans may get altered. In the beginning, my thoughts were to get exercise during the cold months of the year when I am usually so inactive. I can not believe that I am having this debate in my head. Who would of thought that workouts and gardening could have even come close to the same importance for me. A little bit of balance can allow for both.
By the way, for a Monday, yesterdays workouts and class went well. I looked forward to them after the weekend off.
